Spanish Football Federation President Rubiales resigns
Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales announced on his social media account that he resigned from his duties as RFEF President and UEFA Vice President.

In his resignation letter, RFEF President Rubiales said: "I have informed Mr Pedro Rocha, Acting President, that I have resigned from my position as President of the RFEF. I have also informed him that I have resigned from my position at UEFA, so that my position as Vice-President can be changed. After my swift suspension by FIFA and other proceedings against me, it is clear that I cannot return to my position. Insisting on waiting and holding on to this position will not contribute positively either to the Federation or to Spanish football."

"MY FAMILY HAS BEEN AFFECTED BY THE PERSECUTION"

Rubiales stated that his children and family have been affected by the events and added: "My daughters, my family and the people who love me have suffered the effects of extreme persecution and many wrongdoings. From here, I send hugs and love to all employees, councillors, federation members and football people in general and wish them good luck. I thank everyone who supported me in this process."

HE WAS ASKED TO RESIGN AFTER THE HERMOSO INCIDENT

After the FIFA 2023 Women's World Cup final on 20 August, RFEF President Rubiales had behaved inappropriately towards female footballer Jenni Hermoso. Following the incident in question, FIFA launched an investigation against Rubiales and suspended him from office. The Union of European Clubs (UEC) had demanded Rubiales' resignation.

Rubiales had said in his speech at the RFEF extraordinary general assembly that he had been 'assassinated in reputation' and that he would not resign.
