Khojaly genocide victims commemorated in Spain and United States

A commemorative event - “Return to Khojaly”, dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, was held at the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Valldonzella in Barcelona.

The event was organized with the support of Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Work with Diaspora and the Azerbaijan House.

Azerbaijani Ambassador to Spain Ramiz Hasanov, members of the Azerbaijani community in Barcelona, and representatives of the local community attended the event.

The ceremony commenced with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom and sovereignty of the Motherland, as well as the victims of the Khojaly genocide.

Participants were then provided with detailed information about the atrocities committed against the Azerbaijani population of Khojaly by Armenian armed forces on the night of February 25–26, 1992. The efforts undertaken to raise international awareness of the Khojaly tragedy were also highlighted.

The event also highlighted the importance of the international campaign “Justice for Khojaly!”, launched in 2008 at the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, which aims to raise awareness about the crimes against humanity and against the civilian population of Khojaly committed by Armenians.

A similar commemorative event was held in the United States. The Azerbaijani Youth Dance Ensemble, operating under the Azerbaijani Cultural Society of Northern California (ACSNC), dedicated one of its regular classes to the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.

The students honored the memory of the innocent victims of Khojaly by laying flowers at a specially arranged memorial corner.

Anar Allahverdov, Art Director of the society, spoke about the significance of February 26, 1992 — a date indelibly etched in the memory of the Azerbaijani people.

The session also emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory and passing it on to future generations.
