Death toll in irregular migration crossings in Spain's Ceuta region rises to 57

The death toll in irregular migration crossings to Spain's North African territory of Ceuta has increased. According to a statement from Spanish authorities, the number of people who died while trying to reach Ceuta by sea has reached 57. It was reported that during the days of intense crossings, the majority of approximately 60,000 irregular migrants who entered the region returned to the neighboring country of Morocco. It was stated that many migrants voluntarily returned after realizing they could not reach mainland Spain or find shelter in Ceuta.

The Spanish government had dispatched additional National Police, Civil Guards, and military units to Ceuta to ensure border security. Although it was reported that irregular crossings have significantly decreased, it was noted that security forces remain on alert along the border line and coordination with Moroccan authorities continues to prevent new mass crossings.
