US Treasury Secretary Bessent: Agreement with Iran on Opening Strait of Hormuz Possible by Tomorrow

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in an interview with an American channel, made statements regarding the negotiations with Iran and the latest situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Bessent said, “We are negotiating with the Iranians and I think there is a possibility of reaching an agreement today or tomorrow to open the strait and move to a more normalized situation in this conflict.”

In response to a question about whether Iran will demand a transit fee from ships passing through the strait, Bessent stated that free passage would be ensured in the strait. Bessent noted that the prices should decrease further with the exit of hundreds of ships stranded in the Gulf, and that the impact of this situation would not be limited to energy markets; it would also include fertilizers, refined petroleum products, and industrial gases.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a statement to journalists on the matter, emphasized that the US sees the termination of Iran's nuclear program as the 'ultimate agreement', but that the opening of the Strait of Hormuz is an 'urgent' issue. Rubio said, “Denuclearization is the ultimate goal. However, the urgent agreement currently being focused on is related to the Strait. There is no final agreement on the Strait yet, but we hope this will happen very soon.”

Meanwhile, no official assessment has yet been made by Iranian authorities regarding the statements of US officials.
