US national debt surpasses $40 trillion
According to US Treasury Department data, the country's national debt has surpassed the $40 trillion mark for the first time in history, reaching $40 trillion 47 billion.

According to the latest data released by the US Treasury Department, the amount of public debt stands at $32 trillion 266 billion, while intra-governmental debt amounts to $7 trillion 782 billion. Thus, the total public debt has risen to $40 trillion 47 billion. It was reported that the debt stock reached this level months earlier than expected due to continuous budget deficits, pandemic-era spending, tax cuts, and increased military expenditures.

According to the monthly report released by the department, in the first 9 months of the 2026 fiscal year, which began on October 1, 2025, the federal government recorded a fiscal deficit of $1 trillion 367 billion. During this period, net interest payments reached $827 billion, surpassing defense expenditures, which stood at $713 billion. Debt interest became the second largest budget item after $1 trillion 244 billion in social security expenditures.

US public debt exceeded $30 trillion in January 2022 and $39 trillion in March 2026.
