A new study shows that redness appearing at the base of nails may indicate hidden systemic diseases such as heart, liver, and rheumatic disorders.
A study conducted by Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in the USA revealed that the transformation of the half-moon shaped white area at the base of nails into a red color could be an early indicator of serious diseases such as heart failure, cirrhosis, and inflammatory rheumatism.
In the international study, medical cases recorded to date regarding this color change in nail structure were examined. Experts pointed out that the reddening of the nail bases, losing their normal white tone, is a rare occurrence; they determined that this condition shows a strong connection with capillary dilation and heart and vascular, liver, blood, and rheumatological disorders.
'PRESENCE IN MULTIPLE NAILS INDICATES SYSTEMIC DISEASE'
In the examination, it was reported that the pattern of color change is a critical indicator in diagnosis. It was emphasized that redness seen in only one nail is usually caused by subungual tumors or local tissue infections; however, simultaneous appearance in multiple nails directly indicates a systemic internal disease affecting the entire body.
Researchers noted that due to its rarity, doctors and patients often overlook this color change, and they recommended that individuals with noticeable redness at the base of their nails undergo a comprehensive general health screening without delay.
