Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Carney expressed that they welcomed the European Union (EU) Commission's offer of 'joint membership' to Canada, calling for the deepening of strategic and economic cooperation between the two sides.
Carney announced their support for the partnership vision presented by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, stating that Canada and Europe should act together to strengthen their strategic autonomy. Carney proposed comprehensive cooperation in areas such as critical minerals, defense industry capacity, energy security, artificial intelligence, space studies, and digital trade. Carney also stated that opportunities for education and work for young people between the two continents should be facilitated.
'NO ONE CAN CONTROL OUR MARKETS AND SOVEREIGNTY'
Carney emphasized that they are not in search of forming a new power bloc, saying, “We are not pursuing power to dominate others. On the contrary, we aim to increase our joint resilience so that no one can control our open markets, undermine our sovereignty, or sabotage our democracies.”
