Denmark and Greenland Announce 'Security Agreement with the US': To Be Signed Next Week

In a joint statement by the Danish Prime Minister's Office and the Greenland government, it was stated that Denmark, Greenland, and the US are expected to sign an agreement aimed at enhancing security in the Arctic and North Atlantic Region at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly next week. It was noted that the agreement will come into effect after the completion of national parliamentary approval processes following the signing.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, whose views were included in the statement, said, “I am pleased that we are about to make a great agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the US. This agreement, which strengthens our common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic Region, is also great for NATO and Europe. It is also an agreement that recognizes the sovereignty of the Kingdom, its territorial integrity, and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.”

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, in his assessment of the issue, stated:

“It is gratifying that we are about to make an agreement that will ensure and strengthen the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the US, and the Western Alliance. The agreement recognizes Greenland's interests and our place in international cooperation. This is to the benefit of us all.”

US President Donald Trump announced on his social media account that an agreement had been reached with Denmark and Greenland. Stating that the agreement fully addresses all of the US's concerns and that his country has gained permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland, Trump announced that under the agreement, no US rival will be able to establish a military base or maintain a military presence in Greenland.
