Candidate Supported by Trump Wins Elections in Colombia
It was announced that the right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, supported by U.S. President Donald Trump, won the presidential election in Colombia.
According to unofficial results from the National Civil Registry Office in Colombia, 99.91% of the ballots have been counted. In the second round of the presidential election, the right-wing candidate from the Homeland Defenders Movement, Abelardo de la Espriella, received 49.65% of the votes, while the left-wing candidate from the ruling Historical Pact Alliance, Ivan Cepeda, received 48.70%. Espriella, who was supported by U.S. President Donald Trump, won the election according to the results from the National Civil Registry Office.
PRESIDENT PETRO DID NOT RECOGNIZE THE RESULTS
President Gustavo Petro, in a statement regarding the election results, noted some irregularities in the vote counting and said, “No candidate can declare themselves president. The official legal counting process will determine who the president is. I will abide by the judges' decision. I ask our citizens to remain calm. The reality we face shows us a country split right down the middle and foreign interventions that take away our freedom. If we want to protect the homeland and peace in the coming years, a 'National Consensus' is inevitable.”
