Greenland Prime Minister Nielsen: Trump has abandoned the idea of seizing the island
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said, "The US Special Representative for Greenland told us that Donald Trump has abandoned the idea of annexing Greenland."
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen spoke at the session titled 'One world, many views: Who imposes their own view?' held as part of the 'Aix-en-Provence Economic Forum' in Aix-en-Provence, France. Regarding Trump's desire to seize Greenland, Nielsen said, “We have been under very serious pressure in Greenland for 2 years because we are in a strategic region. These are unacceptable pressures.”
Nielsen stated that the pressures have not yet ended but they are trying to take measures by establishing direct dialogue between the US and Greenland. Observing that the world is undergoing a process of change and expressing their desire to ensure security in their region, Nielsen said, “We want to develop partnerships with countries that have principles such as democracy, respect for international law, and human rights.”
'GREENLAND WILL NEVER GIVE UP ITS RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION'
Recalling that France and the European Union (EU) have provided them with support, Nielsen said, “Three days ago, the US Special Representative for Greenland told us that Donald Trump has abandoned the idea of annexing Greenland, but the pressure is still here.”
Noting that Greenland will always stand by the EU, Nielsen said, “Greenland wants to be alongside France, the Nordic countries, Denmark, and NATO. Greenland will never give up its right to self-determination, we will never give up our principles, and we are not for sale.”
