German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that his country will purchase Tomahawk cruise missiles from the US and deploy them domestically.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated in the Federal Parliament that the NATO Summit concluded with positive outcomes. Reminding that European countries have shown a willingness to take more responsibility in defense, Merz said, “Germany will increase its defense spending to 5% of its gross domestic product ahead of the targeted schedule.”
In his speech, Merz noted that Germany will purchase Tomahawk cruise missiles from the US and these missiles will be deployed in the country. Emphasizing that they are thus filling a significant strategic gap in defense, Merz said, “At the same time, we will also work to develop our own European systems and deploy them in Europe. NATO will continue to be a transatlantic alliance. European countries cannot leave their security to others. We are primarily responsible for our own security.”
