Cabinet of Ministers discusses preparations for Azerbaijan’s 2029 population census

On July 17, an expanded meeting chaired by Prime Minister Ali Asadov was held at the Cabinet of Ministers to discuss preparations for Azerbaijan’s population census scheduled for 2029.

The meeting focused on the implementation of the tasks arising from President Ilham Aliyev’s Decree, "On Conducting the Population Census in the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2029," signed on July 7, 2026, as well as preparations for and the implementation of the census.

Addressing the meeting, Prime Minister Ali Asadov emphasized the importance of the population census as the most comprehensive source of demographic data, highlighting its vital role in objectively assessing demographic trends and planning the country’s socio-economic development.

The Prime Minister also underscored the particular historical significance of the upcoming census.

Ali Asadov noted that the Cabinet of Ministers will approve a comprehensive Action Plan to ensure the implementation of the Presidential Decree.

He also announced that a Central Commission for Assistance with the Population Census, to be chaired by a Deputy Prime Minister, will be established to coordinate the activities of central and local executive authorities, agencies, enterprises, and organizations involved in the preparation and conduct of the census.

The Prime Minister added that, for the first time, the population census is planned to be conducted using digital technologies, as well as administrative and geospatial data, in line with relevant UN recommendations and national development priorities.

The meeting also featured remarks by Azer Mursagulov, Chairman of the State Statistical Committee, and Rashad Nabiyev, Minister of Digital Development and Transport, who briefed participants on preparations for the 2029 population census.
