UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham began forming his cabinet after receiving the mandate to form the government from King Charles III yesterday afternoon. The new cabinet was announced via the official social media account of 10 Downing Street. Burnham appointed Yvette Cooper, who was the Foreign Secretary under the resigned Keir Starmer, as the Health Secretary, and Angela Rayner, who was the Deputy Prime Minister in Starmer's first year in power, as the Secretary for Housing, Communities, and Local Government. Burnham appointed Lucy Powell as the Education Secretary, Wes Streeting as the Defense Secretary, and Alex Norris as the Justice Secretary. He also appointed Hamish Falconer, who was the Minister of State for the Middle East under Starmer, as the Minister of State for Intergovernmental Relations and European Relations. In Burnham's cabinet, Stephen Kinnock will serve as the Minister of State for Wales, Douglas Alexander as the Minister of State for Scotland, and Chris Bryant as the Minister of State for Northern Ireland.
Yesterday, it was announced that Ed Miliband would take on the role of Foreign Secretary, Shabana Mahmood as the Home Secretary, and John Healey as the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the new UK cabinet. Louise Haigh was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for the Duchy of Lancaster, and Minister for the Cabinet Office.
