Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu announced the details of the incident related to border security through a post on her social media account. Toiu reported that during the intervention at 11:02, the unauthorized drone that entered the airspace was shot down over a deserted area in the Buzau region. She noted that the operation was carried out with the rapid intervention of the Romanian Armed Forces and coordination with Italian Eurofighter jets that took off as part of the NATO Air Patrol mission. Toiu stated that this was the first instance of a drone being intercepted and destroyed in Romania's national airspace.
Toiu expressed that investigations are ongoing in the area where the target was shot down and on the debris pieces, emphasizing that Romanian President Nicuşor Dan and Defense Minister Radu-Dinel Miruta reiterated their commitments to protect the airspace, and announced that investments in modern air defense and anti-drone systems will continue.
Addressing regional security, Toiu said, “The path to increased security is the path to peace at our border. We will support international efforts aimed at protecting our citizens and assisting our neighbors who defend innocent civilian lives against these illegal attacks.”
