Shara Says President Erdoğan Mediated for Lifting Sanctions on Syria

Syrian President Ahmed Shara, in a statement to the Qatari press, highlighted Turkey's role in the process of lifting sanctions against his country. Shara noted that U.S. President Donald Trump played a significant role in the process of lifting sanctions on Syria, and stated that Saudi Arabia and Turkey also acted as mediators in this regard. Shara expressed that Saudi Arabia initiated mediation efforts last year to lift sanctions on Syria, and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also intervened in this matter.

Speaking about relations with Russia, Shara noted that contacts began months before the fall of the Assad regime. He emphasized that relations between the two countries have been reshaped in the new era based on mutual interests, stating that a new chapter has been opened with Russia. Shara mentioned that Russia's relationship is not only with the former regime but with the Syrian state, saying, “There are historical ties between the two countries dating back to the Soviet Union era.”
