Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis meets with her Ethiopian counterpart

On July 28, as part of her visit to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Speaker of the House of Peoples' Representatives of Ethiopia Tagesse Chaffo.

Tagesse Chaffo noted that Ethiopia attaches great importance to relations with Azerbaijan, adding that Sahiba Gafarova’s visit would contribute to further deepening cooperation between the two countries' legislative bodies.

Sahiba Gafarova, in turn, stated that the visit testifies to the high value that Azerbaijan places on its relations with Ethiopia.

The sides recalled the visits of Ethiopian President Taye Atske Sellassie and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Azerbaijan, as well as discussions on further developing cooperation between the two countries during their meetings with President Ilham Aliyev.

They also emphasized the importance of the visit to Ethiopia by Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, in January 2026.

According to the officials, there are broad opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in tourism, business, mutual investment, culture, as well as humanitarian areas.

The parties underlined that the successful implementation of the ASAN Khidmet model in Ethiopia is a testament to bilateral cooperation, adding that the model is regarded as Azerbaijan's footprint in the country.

The meeting also featured a broad exchange of views on the further development of interparliamentary relations.

Subsequently, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova invited Tagesse Chaffo to pay an official visit to Azerbaijan.

Tagesse Chaffo accepted the invitation with gratitude.

The officials also noted that there is great potential for further deepening cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries, highlighting the significance of visits by parliamentary speakers and members of parliamentary friendship groups in this regard.

They expressed interest in expanding cooperation between parliamentary committees and administrative bodies.

The Ethiopian Speaker said that the country is currently implementing legislative reforms.

According to him, Ethiopia attaches great importance to Azerbaijan's experience in this regard.

The two also stressed the importance of cooperation within the UN, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement, and other international organizations.
