Oman and Iran announced that they discussed a phased framework proposal for establishing a joint temporary corridor through the Strait of Hormuz.
In a joint statement released after the meeting between Oman's Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, it was reported that the importance both countries place on resuming safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz while preserving their sovereign rights was emphasized. The statement noted that Busaidi and Araghchi discussed a phased framework that could provide a practical and feasible basis in the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement highlighted that the framework includes the establishment of a joint temporary navigation corridor along the Strait of Hormuz and an agreement to implement a joint project aimed at clearing the Strait of Hormuz of mines. It stated, "Technical negotiations between the two sides will continue to reach an agreement on a mechanism for providing navigation and security services related to information sharing, traffic management, as well as a permanent navigation corridor and the future management of the Strait of Hormuz."
The statement also underlined the necessity of supporting applicable international law and respecting the sovereign rights of coastal states.
