U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' following trade tensions with Canada.
U.S. President Donald Trump, amidst escalating trade tensions with Canada, announced regarding the executive order he signed in the Oval Office, “We are changing the name of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' effective immediately.” It was stated that the decision was made following evaluations regarding the renaming of the lake located on the border of Canada's Ontario province and the U.S. state of New York.
Referring to the executive order he signed on January 20, 2025, when he began his presidency, to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America', Trump said, “Now we have a gulf and a lake. All we need is an ocean. Maybe we should consider renaming the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as well.”
After the two countries failed to reach a trade agreement on August 21, the U.S. imposed a 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods on August 22. In retaliation, Canada announced that it would impose the same rate of additional tariffs on U.S. products, effective September 8.
