Canadian Prime Minister Carney Reacts to Trump's 'Lake America' Decision

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney commented on his social media account regarding U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to rename Lake Ontario amid escalating trade tensions due to tariffs. Carney noted that the name 'Ontario' comes from the Wendat word 'Ontari’io', meaning "The lake is beautiful, the lake is great," and stated that this name has a history of over 400 years.

Carney pointed out that the name is older than both the Canadian Confederation and the U.S. Declaration of Independence, saying, "We know America is changing. Trade relations, foreign policies, national monuments, and water names are changing. Canadians also know that calling things by their true name means calling this place 'Lake Ontario' yesterday, today, and always."

After failing to reach a trade agreement with Canada on August 21, the U.S. imposed a 50% tariff on approximately 20 billion dollars' worth of Canadian goods on August 22. In retaliation, Canada announced that it would impose the same rate of additional tariffs on U.S. products, effective September 8. Lake Ontario, located on the U.S.-Canada border, is one of the five Great Lakes in North America.
