The Vatican State President and spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, delivered the traditional Sunday prayer from the window of his office overlooking St. Peter's Square in the Vatican. Following the prayer, the Pope addressed developments in the Russia-Ukraine War, stating, "I have been following with sadness the news of violent attacks targeting various cities and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, leading to the loss of innocent lives. I once again call for an end to violence, the cessation of destruction, and the opening of hearts to dialogue and peace."
Pope Leo XIV, referring to the efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who were in Moscow, Russia's capital, yesterday and in Kiev, Ukraine's capital, today for discussions on resolving the Ukraine crisis, said, "I hope the efforts to restart negotiations yield concrete results and open the way for diplomacy."
