EU's Reaction to Serbia over 'Ratko Mladic'

In a joint statement from the social media accounts of European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Antonio Costa, it was expressed that the images from the funeral ceremony held yesterday in Belgrade for the war criminal Ratko Mladic, known as the 'Butcher of Bosnia', who was convicted of the Srebrenica Genocide and crimes against humanity, were shocking.

The EU leaders stated that the official support for the ceremony and the participation of some high-level Serbian officials were extremely regrettable, indicating that Europe has not been able to confront a dark period in its recent history. The statement emphasized that the presence of official elements and officials at the ceremony contradicted the values that form the basis of Serbia's EU accession process, while also noting that all victims of crimes committed in the former Yugoslav countries were remembered.
