Ramadan and Eid al-Adha have been recognized as official holidays across the state of California, USA.
A comprehensive legal regulation regarding religious holidays celebrated by Muslims has been implemented in the state of California, USA. The bill named 'AB 2017', presented by State Assembly Member Matt Haney, was signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom. Under the law, Ramadan and Eid al-Adha have gained official holiday status across the state.
According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the law, which was passed in California, home to the largest Muslim population in the USA with over 1 million Muslims, will provide flexibility for public employees and students. Matt Haney, who prepared the bill, emphasized that the traditions of the Muslim community in California deserve respect, and no student or employee should have to choose between their religious obligations and school or work.
With this decision, California has become the second state to recognize Ramadan and Eid al-Adha as official holidays, following Washington state, which implemented a similar regulation in 2025.
