A statement on sustainable urban development and the role of the media has been adopted at WUF13.
The text of the statement was delivered during an event titled "Media as a Driver of Public Discourse on Housing and Urban Resilience," held within the framework of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13).
The public, voluntary, and numerous stakeholders engaged in promoting civic participation, multilateralism, and impactful cooperation toward sustainable urban development and climate resilience noted that the media plays a vital role in raising public awareness. They emphasized its capacity to foster informed community participation and shape an inclusive dialogue on urban planning and climate adaptation issues.
The participants highlighted that partnership among governments, the urban planning private sector, civil society, international organizations, and media institutions carries special importance for strengthening resilient communities and promoting effective participation.
Furthermore, they recognized that the development of smart, green, and human-centered cities, including post-conflict reconstruction processes and environmentally responsible urban planning, can significantly contribute to achieving sustainable outcomes in this direction.
The stakeholders affirmed that responsible media activity, journalism, and public discourse are core elements in building communicative bridges among sustainable, inclusive, and future-oriented societies.
In conclusion, the Statement called upon all interested parties to further strengthen proactive discussions and cooperation to raise progressive public awareness regarding urbanization and the environment in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
