“In Latin America, Cuenca is recognized as a successful model in waste management and urban sanitation, with a comprehensive collection system operating across the entire city,” said Cristian Zamora, Mayor of Cuenca, in his remarks during the session titled “Waste collectors and a just transition alliances for inclusion and the circular economy in Latin America” held as part of WUF13.
Cristian Zamora highlighted a special program aimed at improving the social protection of waste pickers, providing additional financial incentives to those involved in collecting recyclable materials and reducing city expenses.
He added that Cuenca has secured about $27 million in funding from the French Development Agency (AFD), backed by the European Union, to expand landfill capacity, modernize technology, and renew technical infrastructure.
