Armed attack in South Africa: 12 dead, 9 injured
In an attack by an armed group in a settlement in Johannesburg, South Africa, 12 people were killed and 9 were injured.

 

 

An armed attack occurred at around 11:10 PM local time yesterday in an informal settlement called Jumpers, located in the Cleveland area east of Johannesburg. According to a statement from the South African police, more than 10 heavily armed suspects, who were dropped off near a gas station in a white vehicle, entered the settlement from two different access points. The suspects advanced through the area, opening fire on residents at multiple points, and then fled the scene in the same vehicle.

Health and police teams dispatched to the area upon notification determined that 8 men and 3 women died at the scene. The death toll rose to 12 after a man who was taken to the hospital in critical condition also died. It was reported that 9 people injured by gunfire are being treated in various hospitals.

While the police have launched a large-scale operation to capture the fleeing attackers, officials stated in their announcement regarding the incident that the reason for the attack is currently unknown and this situation is part of the ongoing investigation.
