UK Supreme Court finds 'Rwanda' plan unlawful
UK Supreme Court has declared that the UK government's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is 'unlawful'.

UK's highest judicial authority, the High Court, announced that the UK government's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is 'unlawful' and said: "Accordingly, unless and until deficiencies in the asylum process are addressed, sending asylum seekers to Rwanda would be unlawful under section 6 of the Human Rights Act 1998. This would constitute a violation of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits torture and inhuman or degrading treatment." Stating that Rwanda is 'not a safe third country', the UK High Court emphasised that the decision was unanimous.

The British Home Office had previously announced that they would send asylum seekers arriving by boat through France to Rwanda, where they would wait for the applications of asylum seekers. This decision of the British government was severely criticised by non-governmental organisations and some of the asylum seekers took this decision to court.
