As part of her official visit to Ethiopia, Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, met with ambassadors of African countries and of other regions of the world in Addis Ababa, on July 30.
In her remarks, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova noted that strengthening multilateralism in the modern era requires adapting it to new global realities.
According to her, parliaments should become one of the main driving forces in this process.
Parliaments stand as the primary institutions that translate the expectations of citizens into public policy and strengthen transparency, inclusiveness, and public trust.
Sahiba Gafarova also shared her views on the role of Africa in the changing world, the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, the activities of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the world's largest international parliamentary organization, its future, and the African Agenda - 2063.
Speaking about the IPU’s activities, she said that the organization, as a multilateral political platform, brings together the world's parliaments, playing an important role in the development of dialogue, democracy, and inter-parliamentary cooperation.
The meeting also featured an exchange of views on the participation of Azerbaijan and African countries in international parliamentary organizations, Africa's development and position in the world, Azerbaijan's achievements in the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, the outcomes of COP29 held in Baku, as well as other topics.
