The Kenyan Ministry of Health announced that the death toll from Ebola in the country has risen to 2 with the death of a 65-year-old woman. Officials stated that there is no evidence of the virus spreading to the general public, with a total of 9 cases identified.
In a statement by Kenya's Director General of Health Services, Patrick Amoth, it was reported that a 65-year-old woman, who had direct contact with the first person to die from the Ebola outbreak, passed away in the hospital where she was being treated in isolation. With the woman's death, the death toll among the 9 confirmed cases in the country rose to 2. Amoth noted that the treatment of the other 7 patients in quarantine continues in two separate isolation centers, stating, "Her death painfully reminded us that Ebola is a serious and deadly disease that can suddenly worsen without warning."
Officials emphasized that there is no evidence of the outbreak spreading to the general public, stating that all detected cases are within the same contact cluster. The first case in Kenya was identified in a person who traveled from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to the capital Nairobi earlier this month and died on October 5.
Since May, the outbreak in the DRC has recorded over 9,000 cases and more than 4,600 deaths, prompting increased health checks and border measures in neighboring countries due to the virus's spread.
