Foreign Affairs: Turkey-EU relations should not be reduced to the Cyprus issue
Regarding the results of the European Union (EU) Heads of State and Government Special Summit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "The understanding that reduces the multifaceted Turkey-EU relations to the Cyprus issue should be abandoned. Turkey, as a candidate country, remains committed to EU membership."

Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a written statement regarding the decisions taken on Turkey at the Special Summit of EU Heads of State and Government held in Brussels on April 17-18, 2024.
In the statement, it was stated that these decisions are a new example of the EU's lack of strategic vision regarding Turkey and global developments and added: "The summit conclusions emphasize that it is in the strategic interest of the EU to develop a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship with Turkey. However, it is a serious inconsistency that no concrete decision has been taken on the recommendations contained in the Joint Communication on EU-Turkey relations prepared by EU Commission Vice-President/EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Borrell and the European Commission. We will never accept the linking of progress in Turkey-EU relations with the Cyprus issue. The mentality that reduces the multifaceted Turkey-EU relations to the Cyprus issue must be abandoned. Such a mentality cannot make a positive and constructive contribution to the Cyprus problem or other regional and global issues. As a candidate country, Turkey remains committed to EU membership. However, we reject the selective limitation of our cooperation to certain areas. Our dialogue with the EU will be based on the pace, level and scope of the EU's steps towards Turkey in the coming period, within the framework of reciprocity."
