The upgrade of relations between the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan to the level of strategic partnership reflects Baku’s growing role in the emerging multipolar world order, said British expert Neil Watson during the latest episode of the program “Azerbaijan and the World” broadcast on the AZERTAC website.
According to him, following the end of the war in Ukraine, Azerbaijan’s significance will become particularly evident in the context of energy security, sustainable development, education, and the climate agenda. It is precisely in these areas, Watson believes, that the two sides possess the greatest potential for mutually beneficial cooperation.
The expert emphasized that the United Kingdom has traditionally regarded Azerbaijan as one of its key energy partners. This strategic line, he noted, was established more than 30 years ago with the signing of the “Contract of the Century” and has remained unchanged ever since. At a time when fossil fuels—above all natural gas—continue to play a critically important role in the global economy, Azerbaijan serves as a source of reliable and diversified energy supplies, the program’s guest added.
Neil Watson also pointed to the importance of the Southern Gas Corridor and other Caspian energy routes, highlighting the strategic role of BP in their development. In his assessment, these projects contribute to strengthening Europe’s energy security and reducing its dependence on Russian gas, while simultaneously delivering benefits both to international companies and to Azerbaijan itself.
