WHO's Ebola outbreak statement: 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths reported
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared the latest data on the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, stating that the situation is alarming. Ghebreyesus reported that despite 82 confirmed cases, the true scale of the outbreak is much larger, with approximately 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared an update on the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda via his social media account. Highlighting that the situation in the DRC is extremely concerning, Ghebreyesus stated, “So far, 82 cases and 7 deaths have been confirmed. However, we know that the outbreak in the DRC is much larger. Currently, there are approximately 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths. As surveillance efforts and laboratory tests improve, these numbers change, but violence and security issues in the region hinder intervention.”

Ghebreyesus reported that additional WHO personnel have been deployed to the Ituri region, the epicenter of the outbreak, and noted that he is in regular contact with government officials to coordinate intervention steps.

SITUATION STABLE IN UGANDA

Addressing the situation in neighboring Uganda, the WHO Director-General noted that the situation in the region is under control. Ghebreyesus commented, “The situation in Uganda is currently stable; 2 confirmed cases and 1 death have been reported. No new cases or deaths have been reported. We are supporting the government in prevention and intervention efforts.”

Ghebreyesus also added that he held an informational meeting with member states to provide updated information on ongoing efforts.
