Iran Condemns US Airstrikes: Violation of Ceasefire Agreement
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the US airstrikes on the country's southern shores, stating that this is a clear violation of the United Nations Charter and the memorandum of understanding.
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a written statement regarding the US airstrikes. In the statement condemning the attacks by the US military targeting coastal surveillance facilities on Iran's southern shores last night, it was emphasized that these actions are a clear violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the United Nations (UN) Charter and the first article of the memorandum of understanding signed on June 18. Meanwhile, it was stated that Israel also attacked Lebanon in coordination with the US, which also violated the agreement.
The statement highlighted Iran's right to legitimate defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, stating that the country's sovereignty, security, and national interests will be defended with all strength. The statement included the expressions, “The defensive attacks by the Iranian Armed Forces on targets belonging to US forces were carried out on this basis.” It was noted that the US and the parties complicit in these attacks are responsible for the consequences of the situation that has arisen.
The statement called on the countries south of the Persian Gulf to adhere to the principles of good neighborliness and warned that their territories and resources should not be used for attacks against Iran. Additionally, a call was made to the UN Secretary-General, the UN Security Council, and other international institutions not to remain silent in the face of the US violating international law and to fulfill their responsibilities regarding regional peace and security.
