February 5, 2026, marks the 108th anniversary of Gara Garayev, a genius composer, outstanding representative of Azerbaijani culture, People's Artist of the USSR, and Hero of Socialist Labor.
On this occasion, musicians, culture, as well as culture and art figures from different countries shared their insights on the creativity of the renowned composer with the Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC).
Spanish artist Nani Boronat said: “Gara Garayev’s musical heritage sheds light on the art, enabling me to deeply embrace it. His preludes remind me of the creativity of my counterpart Joan Miró, as well as Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky. Gara Garayev’s musical works are inspiring and extremely appealing.”
According to Boronat, he discovered Gara Garayev’s creativity thanks to his father, adding that he is currently collaborating with pianist Ulviyya Abdullayeva, who also helped him to take a deeper look at the Azerbaijani culture. He also highlighted the close parallels between the Azerbaijani mugham and Andalusian flamenco.
The Spanish artist also touched upon the latest joint project with Ulviyya Abdullayeva, a synthesis of concert and exhibition titled “From Alhambra to Shirvanshah”.
