People’s Artist Rasim Balayev laid to rest

The farewell ceremony for Azerbaijan’s People’s Artist Rasim Balayev—who left an enduring mark on audiences with his unique roles, Chairman of the Board of the Union of Cinematographers of Azerbaijan, State Prize laureate, and holder of the “Shohrat,” “Sharaf,” and “Istiglal” orders—was held on March 30 at the Azerbaijan State Academic National Drama Theatre.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Ali Asadov, state and government officials, members of parliament, as well as prominent figures from science, culture, and the arts.

The late artist’s coffin was placed on a pedestal on the stage of the theatre, which had been solemnly decorated in mourning.

Wreaths from President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, as well as state and government institutions, were laid around the pedestal.

Colleagues, friends, prominent cultural and artistic figures, and admirers of Rasim Balayev’s work gathered at the theatre to pay their last respects to the distinguished actor.

The farewell ceremony began with a minute of silence in memory of the deceased.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Culture Saadat Yusifova conveyed condolences on behalf of Minister of Culture Adil Karimli.

She noted that Rasim Balayev’s passing is a heavy loss for Azerbaijani culture and national cinema: “The death of Rasim Balayev, whose bright personality left an indelible mark in everyone’s heart, has deeply shaken us all. Through the films he starred in, he always elevated the prestige of Azerbaijani cinema. His creative work spans nearly 200 films. The artist’s long-standing activity was always at the center of the state’s attention. National Leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev showed special care for his creativity. Rasim Balayev’s work is a school for young actors.”

Chairman of the Union of Azerbaijani Writers, People’s Writer Anar stated that Rasim Balayev was one of the brightest stars and greatest figures of Azerbaijani cinema. He noted that the actor gave eternal life to the characters he portrayed and emphasized that his human qualities and unique roles will remain forever in memory.

People’s Artist Shafiga Mammadova said that Rasim Balayev’s passing had deeply affected her. “This loss is very great and heavy for Azerbaijani cinema. It is difficult to speak about the artist in the past tense. Rasim Balayev lived an honorable life and was an extremely loyal and faithful friend,” she added.

People’s Artist Ogtay Mirgasimov emphasized that they had worked together in several films. “He was truly a great actor and a wonderful friend. Working with him was a real pleasure,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Asim Balayev expressed gratitude to the country’s leadership for the continuous attention and care shown to his father’s artistic legacy.

The body of People’s Artist Rasim Balayev was then carried out of the theatre building and transported to the Alley of Honors. Prayers were recited for the soul of the deceased, after which the outstanding artist was laid to rest. Wreaths and bouquets of flowers were placed on his grave.
