New territories rich in rare elements discovered in Azerbaijan

The Earth Sciences Department of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has conducted research identifying large, promising areas rich in rare earth elements on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus and in the East Zangezur region.

Ecological and geochemical analyses carried out by the Institute of Geography revealed that concentrations of elements such as terbium, indium, rubidium, yttrium, palladium, strontium, antimony, arsenic, and silver in soil, rock, and plant samples from East Zangezur were 2–4 times higher than the average levels in the Earth’s crust.

These findings open up new opportunities for integrating the liberated territories into economic activity, advancing mineral exploration, and supplying raw materials for high-tech industries.
