Georgian political scientist: Washington meeting is a historic turning point for the South Caucasus and world

“The meeting held in Washington on August 8 and the signing of the Joint Declaration leading to a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia are of great importance for the countries of the South Caucasus,” said Simon Kopadze, director general of the Foundation for the Development of Georgia-Azerbaijan Relations.

According to Kopadze, the signing of the Joint Declaration between Armenia and Azerbaijan is one of the most important events of the 21st century.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Washington meeting, he noted, was the diplomatic approach of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Despite being the victor, President Aliyev treated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan not as a defeated opponent, but rather as a partner. “Ilham Aliyev's generosity was evident here. He not only extended a hand for partnership to Pashinyan but also to his former adversary. This is a very valuable step,” Kopadze said.

He added: “I saw with my own eyes how those seven regions, as well as Khankendi and Shusha, were developed in just two years under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. Imagine, Khankendi was a ruin just a year ago, but within two years, extensive infrastructure was built and an international summit was held there. This is an unprecedented achievement.”

The political scientist believes that after the signing of the peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the region will enter a period of significant development.
