Iran has sent a letter to the United Nations (UN) calling for the condemnation of the US naval blockade and the immediate cessation of military actions. Iran's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Gholamhossein Darzi, stated that the blockade violates international law.
Iran's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Gholamhossein Darzi, sent an official letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, Aglaia Balta. The letter emphasized that the US naval blockade and military actions against Iran clearly violate the UN Charter and international law. Darzi called on the UN to reject and condemn the US naval blockade and to immediately cease military aggression.
The letter highlighted the US military actions that began on February 28, 2026, as well as sanctions targeting civil aviation and key economic sectors, noting that these steps, combined with the naval blockade, exacerbate humanitarian crises. It stated that the blockade hinders access to essential needs such as food, medicine, medical supplies, and fuel, directly affecting the civilian population, and constitutes a 'collective punishment' prohibited under international humanitarian law.
Darzi stated that the US is internationally responsible for compensating all material and moral damages it has caused, and called on UN member states not to support the US's unilateral coercive measures. He emphasized that Iran will continue to exercise its right to legitimate defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
