Five new temporary members for the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term have been elected.
A closed voting procedure was held in the UN General Assembly for the election of 5 new temporary members for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a 2-year term. In the first round, Zimbabwe from the African group received 182 votes and Trinidad and Tobago from the Latin America-Caribbean group received 181 votes, securing a 2-year membership in the UNSC.
In the Western European and Other Group category, Austria, Germany, and Portugal competed for 2 seats in the UNSC. Portugal secured its membership with 134 votes and Austria with 131 votes, while Germany lagged behind with 105 votes. In the Asia-Pacific group, Kyrgyzstan received 105 votes and the Philippines 85 votes, failing to reach the two-thirds majority in the first round, leading to a second and third round. In the third round, the Philippines remained at 49 votes, while Kyrgyzstan was elected to the UNSC with 142 votes.
The elected members will begin their 2-year term at the start of 2027, replacing the temporary members Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia, whose terms will end at the end of this year. Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lithuania, and Liberia currently make up the other 2-year temporary members in the UNSC. Germany, having fallen behind Portugal and Austria in the first round of voting in the UN General Assembly, failed to secure any of the two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group for the 2027-2028 term.
