In the present-day world order, transforming a military victory into sustainable peace is a difficult and sublime mission facing every leader. The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, bestowed upon President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev by the authoritative Sheikh Zayed Foundation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is a clear example of global recognition of this mission. This award is not only a diplomatic success; it is also a confirmation of the world’s acceptance of Azerbaijan’s peace agenda.
AZERTAC presents an article on the topic.
Sheikh Zayed Foundation: a symbol of humanism and global solidarity
The Sheikh Zayed Foundation was established to perpetuate the legacy of the founder of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The philosophy of the Foundation’s core mission is to promote humanism, tolerance, environmental protection, and peace among the peoples of the world. The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity is a prestigious international award presented to individuals and institutions in recognition of their efforts to promote the principles of peace, solidarity, and peaceful coexistence worldwide. Previous recipients of this award include UN Secretary-General António Guterres; King Abdullah II and Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan; the late Pope Francis; the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in Egypt, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb; the founder of the IMAD Association and anti-extremism activist originally from Morocco, Latifa Ibn Ziaten; Kenyan peace mediator and community mobilizer Ms. Shamsa Abubakar Fadhil; Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley; and others.
It should also be noted that the Foundation presents awards in several areas. The award is presented to individuals and institutions only in recognition of their exceptional services. The fact that the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity has been bestowed upon President Ilham Aliyev is a sign of high international recognition of Azerbaijan's leading role in the peace-building process, both regionally and globally.
A Victorious Leader in War, a Victorious State in Peace
History shows that there have been many strong commanders, but only a handful of them have managed to turn their military victory into political peace. The absolute victory that Azerbaijan achieved in the 44-day Patriotic War and the anti-terrorist measures of 2023 was about the restoration of international law.
The strategy implemented under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev has shown that the success achieved on the battlefield must also be underpinned by farsighted diplomatic maneuvering. Azerbaijan has not just liberated its lands; it has also created a new geopolitical reality in the region, laying the foundation for long-term peace. In this process, the reconciliation of military power with the principles of international law has created the conditions for the full restoration of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country.
The large-scale construction work carried out after the victory and the Great Return program have been the most vivid examples of how a military victory can be transformed into civil progress. In particular, the state of Azerbaijan has proven that true military skill lies not just in winning a war, but also in creating peace and ensuring sustainability for future generations.

Under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan chose the path of “offering peace for the development of the region” in the post-conflict period, not “humiliating the defeated side.” This is an example of the great political wisdom and humanism demonstrated by the victorious side.
The peace agenda based on the principles proposed by Baku lays the foundation for a new economic model serving the well-being of all the peoples of the region. Having replaced the destructive rhetoric of war with a process of construction and restoration, Azerbaijan has created tangible opportunities to become a transport and logistics center of the South Caucasus. This approach demonstrates to the world not only the military power of our state, but also its strategic vision and commitment to international security. Thus, the peace initiatives have turned the page of hatred in the region, opening the door to an era of mutual respect.
A firm stance on attempts to exact revenge
Azerbaijan, a country pursuing an independent policy, continues to confidently advance toward its strategic goals as the main guarantor of stability in the region. However, despite Azerbaijan's peace-making efforts, there are still forces in the region that want to coerce Armenia into revenge. Attempts by foreign circles to arm Armenia and push the region into a new conflict jeopardize the already precarious peace. Such pressure and attempts to create artificial tensions are always doomed to fail in the face of Azerbaijan's unwavering determination and military readiness. Baku has repeatedly noted that Armenia should not sacrifice its future to the interests of foreign forces and that signing a peace treaty and joining regional cooperation is the only option for it.
President Ilham Aliyev's principled and resolute policy has become an insurmountable barrier to such attempts - Azerbaijan has fully restored its sovereignty and retained its status as the party in charge. An end has also been put to “gray zones” and remnants of separatism in the region. Despite all pressure, national interests have been placed above everything else.
Washington meeting: a historic end to years of conflict
One of the most important stages of the peace process was the Washington meeting held in August 2025. The fact that the issue was put to rest at the meeting showed that Azerbaijan’s determination has been accepted by the world powers. It was not only about the initialing of a peace agreement, but also about Armenia's full and unconditional recognition of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and an official rejection of any fantasies of revenge.
This diplomatic victory showed that Azerbaijan's resolve in the military sphere has now become an absolute reality, reflected in international legal documents. The agreement reached in Washington is considered the culminating point of direct dialogue and mutual trust, preventing external manipulation in the South Caucasus. This official commitment on the part of Armenia has removed years-long obstacles to the economic revival of the region and created a legal basis for large-scale cooperation. Thus, the international community has once again confirmed Azerbaijan's rightful position and its role as the builder of a new regional order.
Azerbaijan’s model of conflict resolution
The absolute victory of Azerbaijan and the subsequent peace-building process have been an exemplary experience for the world. What international organizations were unable to do for 30 years, Azerbaijan accomplished on its own, both on the battlefield and at the diplomatic table.
- Aligning international law with military force;
- Rapid restoration of the territories liberated from occupation (the Great Return);
- Balanced and mutually respectful cooperation with neighboring states.
The experience Azerbaijan has gained in these areas has shown that the helplessness of international law in the face of frozen conflicts can only be overcome by national determination and a strong state strategy. The model Azerbaijan has implemented has ushered in a new standard in modern military history in terms of the precision of military operations and the protection of the civilian population’s safety. Our country has proven that the path to a just peace does not lie in accepting the status quo, but in restoring true legitimacy and ending occupation. In particular, the determination demonstrated by Baku has become a moral and political beacon for other states fighting for sovereignty and territorial integrity around the world.
The Sheikh Zayed Foundation award bestowed upon the President of Azerbaijan is a symbol of this great will, just peace, and the path of cooperation chosen by Azerbaijan. Thanks to the diplomatic skills of President Ilham Aliyev, the South Caucasus is no longer a zone of conflict, but a center of global stability, logistics, and energy. At the same time, this prestigious award is a manifestation of high recognition of Azerbaijan's humanistic steps and peace-building efforts. Our country has gained global acknowledgment not only for its energy resources, but also as a main pillar of security in the region. The implementation of strategic projects such as the Zangezur Corridor will further strengthen Azerbaijan's place on the international transit map and usher in new development opportunities for the entire Eurasian region. Thus, each success achieved is further evidence of Azerbaijan’s unshakable sovereignty and peace-loving policy.
