Giulio Centemero: Azerbaijan's geographical location creates ample opportunities for parliamentary dialogue

As part of her visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), Giulio Centemero, on January 27.

During the meeting, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova highlighted the importance of the 2nd Session of the PAM Women Parliamentary Forum and reiterated the Azerbaijani parliament’s interest in expanding cooperation with the institution. Speaker Gafarova hailed the approval of the application to grant observer status to Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis at the PAM Bureau meeting held yesterday. She noted that once the final decision is formalized, this status will open new opportunities for the development of mutual inter-parliamentary relations.

PAM President Giulio Centemero emphasized that the Assembly is equally interested in collaborating with Azerbaijan. He remarked that while Azerbaijan is not located directly in the Mediterranean, its position in a highly significant strategic region creates excellent opportunities for parliamentary dialogue.

The discussions also focused on the interaction between the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network (NAM PN) and the PAM, including the possibility of granting mutual observer status. Both sides noted that because both organizations address similar global challenges, there is a strong foundation for institutional cooperation.
