WHO: 7 hantavirus cases detected on ship in the Atlantic Ocean
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that 7 hantavirus cases were detected on a passenger ship in the southern Atlantic Ocean.
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated in a social media post that 7 hantavirus cases were identified on a passenger ship traveling from Argentina in the south of the Atlantic Ocean to Cabo Verde in the west of Africa. Ghebreyesus emphasized that the WHO considers the risk of this virus to the global population as low, saying, “As of May 4, since the ship set sail on April 1, 7 hantavirus cases (2 confirmed and 5 suspected), including 3 deaths, have been identified.”
Ghebreyesus noted that the WHO will continue to monitor the situation, stating, "The WHO is working with the relevant countries and the ship's operator to support the passengers and crew on board. Coordinated international intervention includes in-depth investigations, case isolation and care, medical evacuation, and laboratory examinations."
