Joint Reaction from 7 Western Countries to Israel's 'E1 Project' Decision: A Blow to the Two-State Solution
In a joint statement, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, and Canada declared Israel's decision on the illegal E1 settlement project in East Jerusalem unacceptable, stating it undermines the two-state solution.
In a joint statement signed by the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, and Canada, a reaction was expressed to the Israeli government's decision to open construction tenders for the illegal E1 settlement project in East Jerusalem. The statement emphasized that the decision is unacceptable and noted that it would deal a blow to the two-state solution, reminding that the international community has long opposed the expansion of settlements. The statement included the following: “The E1 settlement will undermine the possibility of a two-state solution by dividing the West Bank and damaging the geographical integrity of Palestinian territories. International law clearly states that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal. This is the stance of the international community, as confirmed by the United Nations Security Council.”
'WE CALL ON THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT TO IMMEDIATELY WITHDRAW THE PLANS'
The statement highlighted that this decision is even more concerning at a time when settler violence against civilians in the West Bank has reached unprecedented levels and there are severe restrictions on the Palestinian economy, noting the following:
“We call on the Israeli government to immediately withdraw these plans and cease the expansion of settlements in the West Bank. These steps will not only distance us from peace but also damage Israel's international standing. Companies should not consider bidding on construction tenders. They should be aware of the legal and reputational consequences, including the risk of being involved in a serious violation of international law.”
At the end of the statement, the leaders of the 7 countries reiterated their commitment to a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace based on a two-state solution.
